Scenic Sketches Community Art Project
During the
summer of 2008 I went to Washington Park in
downtown Albany several times a week. I carried
a bag full of art materials and invited people I
met to create drawings based on the surrounding
scenery. I met people of different backgrounds
from all over the world. I photographed
participants with their sketches in front of the
scenes they drew.
I collected
over forty 11 x 17 inch drawings. At the end of
summer I exhibited the work at Albany's First
Friday to celebrate and honor everyone who took
part in the project. I drew a 5 x 7 foot map of
Washington Park and marked the locations where
each person created his/her drawing. This map
was presented with the drawings the night of the
show. In May I am starting the second annual
Scenic Sketches Community Art Project. This year
I am expanding beyond Washington Park by
collecting drawings from all over New York State
with a corresponding five by seven foot map.
